Gran Turismo fans were treated to the release of Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 back in 2013. That was in the heat of the launch of the PS4, which naturally made many folks wonder when the series would make its way to the newer, more powerful system. That question was answered last year when a brand-new entry was revealed as the PS4-exclusive GT Sport. It was interesting that the name did not carry a number, but it was indeed the next step in the series following GT6. So, is this Gran Turismo 7 just in a slightly different coat of paint? Well, according to series’ producer, GT Sport is its own thing.
The folks over at Finder got a chance to spend some time with Gran Turismo Producer, Kazunori Yamauchi. During their time with him, the topic of the future of the series came up. According to Yamauchi, GT Sport is basically the next chapter in the series’ lineage. As for a proper next entry in the core series, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon. Yamauchi stated plainly that Gran Turismo 7 is currently not on the drawing board. Here’s his full statement on the matter:
“Gran Turismo 7 is not currently planned. All our studios are focused on Gran Turismo Sport and, once it is out, the DLC that follows afterwards.”
It looks like we should expect GT Sport to be on the front-lines of the Gran Turismo series for the foreseeable future. If GT7 ever does swing around the corner, it may perhaps be either at the end of the PS4’s lifecycle (whenever that is) or even when the PS5 inevitably releases.
