While Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune may have aged a bit since its initial launch in 2007, it’s still a fantastic game even by today’s standards. Back in 2007, the PlayStation 3 was starving for a must-have exclusive and Drake’s Fortune quenched many gamer’s thirsts. Typically, Drake’s Fortune is near the bottom of many gamer’s Uncharted rankings. However, I believe that in a handful of ways Drake’s Fortune is still unmatched by any of its sequels.
Say Hello to Mass Serial Murderer Nathan Drake
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune works extremely well as a beginning for a longrunning and fantastic series, as well as a standalone experience. We were introduced to Drake, Sully, and Elena for the first time, which allowed Naughty Dog more freedom with the writing. Whereas all of the sequels had to build off of the groundwork that Drake’s Fortune started. Character interactions are extremely witty and fun, and the dialogue, in my opinion, is funniest of all the Uncharted games.
While all of the Uncharted games have some form of twist in the story, none of them are as unsuspecting as Drake’s Fortune. Why is this twist so awesome? This is the first Uncharted game, and while Nathan Drake is capable of impossible jumps in the game, we assumed that the story was based in reality. So when zombie monsters show up and start wreaking havoc, it’s a really insane and memorable moment.
Not only is it crazy from a story perspective, but the game quickly changes in tone and setting. You enter the sewers where it is dark, scary, and full of monsters that want to kill you. Suddenly the happy-go-lucky action game feels like a horror title. Gameplay is mixed up when you’re able to kill human baddies alongside the zombie-monster things.
In case you missed Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune last generation on PS3, Sony released a Remastered Collection on PlayStation 4. This version is the best version of the 10-year-old gem.
