RAGE 2 was inadvertently leaked by Walmart Canada weeks ago. Pete Hines made a nice jab about the fact during Bethesda’s E3 2018 Showcase. The game was already revealed thanks to “friends at Walmart Canada, best known for low prices and ability to keep secrets.”
The live-action trailer was revisited during the pre-show, and an explosive performance by Andrew WK for the song that accompanies the trailer kicked off the showcase. While the reaction of the crowd was mixed, there were those that thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
After the musical performance and a brief moment of height jokes between the representatives from id Software and Avalanche Studios, a deep dive into the gameplay began. The main character, Walker, starts off by condemning God for forsaking the Earth. He watched, powerless, as an asteroid collided with Earth which begat mutants and monstrosities. These creatures murdered his entire family and he could do nothing to save them. Now all that remains for Walker is the rage they have left him with.
Enraged beyond belief, Walker is ready to exact his vengeance on the mutants and the various gangs that roam and control the dystopian wasteland that has taken over Earth. With an arsenal of weapons, vehicles that “if you see it, you can drive it,” and special abilities, Walker stands a good chance against any adversary.
The universe is completely open world and expansive. Utilizing vehicles appears to be a core component to RAGE 2, as the gameplay demo includes vehicle combat en route to Walker’s destination to clear the way. Once he arrives at the gang’s base of operations, he flies out of the combat car and engages in brutally devastating gunplay. When the screen flashes to a blue hue, it appears that Walker is in a “Rage” state and can dole out increased damage and move incredibly fast.
Walker dodges and weaves between enemies, always on the move. This gameplay style reminds me of Doom, which is a welcome feel. Toting various firearms and secondary weapons such as a thrown rotating blade, Walker makes short work of the gang in the area he has arrived in. Bodies fly in every direction, limbs are cut off by the rotating blade weapon, and explosions illuminate the area and cause cascades of blood to rain down from blown up enemies.
Surprisingly, there is no solid release date for RAGE 2. At the end of this segment of the showcase, it is revealed that the game will release in Spring of 2019. The look and feel of this game are much akin to Doom with brightly colored enemies and weapons, with added vehicle combat. Are you looking forward to RAGE 2?
