Sony has published a press release today which contains some interesting information about the sales of the PS4 platform.
The family of PS4 consoles has hit 70.6 million units sold as of December 3rd, 2017. This is quite the achievement; the PS4 is now 30 million units short of hitting the milestone of 100 million. Sony also mentioned that the PlayStation VR peripheral has sold over 2 million units (also as of December 3rd, 2017) since it launched last year. PS4 software sales (physical and digital) are at 617.8 million, while PS VR game sales are at 12.2 million.
The Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House, had this to say about the sales:
“We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction. I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming network in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”
It will be very interesting to see how the PS4 continues to sell throughout the rest of its lifecycle. It’s pretty much at the midway point now, which means it’s soon going to start ‘getting up in years’, so to speak. Will it hit that 100 million milestone? Only time will tell.
