Sony, along with many other tech giants, has been revealing quite a lot of cool new things at CES 2018. But, there was one detail that Sony chose to share that wasn’t really about a new product, but rather it was about the success of one of their already well-established products: the PlayStation 4.
The PS4 launched back in November 2013 to a huge amount of fanfare, and it’s been making big moves ever since. Now, Sony has dropped a pretty remarkable announcement: the PS4 has now sold through 73.6 million units worldwide. Considering the system is just a few months over four years old, this is quite an achievement. It’s predecessor, the PS3, ended its 11-year production run with about 83.8 million units sold worldwide. The PS4 is a little over 10 million units shy of matching those numbers; since it’s been such a big hit since launch day, it just might very well end up outpacing the PS4.
This is quite the achievement for Sony after the last few years prior to the launch of the PS4 really took a beating on the company. Various parts of businesses were not doing so well, leaving the PS4 to become the ‘golden goose’ of the whole company. The PS4 Pro, a mid-generation hardware upgrade, launched back in late 2016. Its release should definitely keep the PS4 platform moving along for the next few years.
